Residence - Franklin Lakes, NJ

Program

Interior design renovation and historical contextualism for a circa 1600 AD dutch colonial residence

Challenges

Adding modern details, while preserving the integrity of a colonial floor plan. The existing wood shingles, sandstone floor facade and gable roof were preserved as part of the original structure

Strong architectural consistency, detail orientated continuity between the old and the new enhancements

Digression from the traditional Dutch Colonial floor-plan, by eliminating a portion of the 1st and 2nd floor ceilings, allowing for the creation of an entryway 3 levels high

Installation of exposed roof trusses to emphasize the gable roof

Modification of existing exposed beams into a curved ceiling truss

Creation of a modern kitchen with a hint of traditional style. By maintaining the exposed ceiling beams and paneled doors, while utilizing a palette of green, white, glass and wood, RSA was able to blend the past with the present
